The improvisational music community is filled with elusive acts that somehow manage to slip in below the radar, only to emerge suddenly at the heart of the scene ready to roar into action. In many parts of the country, Tulsa’s Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey remain a best kept secret. But the word about this fiery fusionistic groove trio is finally beginning to spread, as well it should. While their roots lie in traditional jazz, JFJO has developed into a band of indigenous improvisationalists whose mission is to make music that smokes you. On any given night, the trio of Brian Haas (Rhodes piano), Reed Mathis (bass), and Matt Edwards (drums) takes the stage with a handful of original tunes and a strong desire to reinvent them all right in front of your eyes. Instrumental prowess aside, these brazen youngsters make it succeed with raw energy and sheer musical chemistry. The results can be positively explosive.
