What is Half of Zero? Yeah, it’s a fraction your math teacher said didn’t exist. We know it’s still zero in the literal sense. But besides that, 0/2 is the amalgamation of the desire of three people to make rock and roll. Back in 2001, Jess (guitar) met Ben (bass), and they soon discovered they both had the same wish: to make interesting music with minimal or no vocals. So they started to jam and write some songs together for nothing more than fun. After a few months of writing with Jawsh of Cephalic Carnage on the skins, Dan (drums) was introduced to the guys and was an immediate fit with Jess and Ben’s focus. His skills and previous experience were also a valuable asset and crucial to the growth of this burgeoning group. Since Jawsh was busy with the recording and touring schedule of a professional musician, he took his leave and Dan took the sticks. After months of getting together and jamming, Jess, Ben, and Dan decided to play some shows to have some fun and see what kind of response they’d get. The results were twofold. Lots of people loved it right away; others were harder to sell. “No vocals? How can you do that?” Simple, you just let the music speak.
And speak it has. Over the past two years, Half of Zero has shared the stage with local favorites such as Black Lamb, New Ancient Astronauts and Core of the Earth as well as national acts such as Meatjack, Brant Bjork and The Cutthroats 9. Quickly finding their own unique place in Denver’s growing hard rock scene, Half of Zero honed their sound and developed their songs to the point that the inevitable occurred—the DIY self released album “The Number of the Least” was unveiled in 2004. Recorded and engineered by veteran Benny Lamb (Black Lamb), “The Number of the Least” showcases what Half of Zero is: rhythm, tone, and riff. Anything more is extraneous, anything less is lacking. So now it is cast in stone. With Half of Zero you get three people ready to make you move your head involuntarily, shake your rump in rhythm, and laugh at how serious so many people take themselves and their music…
